Thomas Sidney Cooper was born in Canterbury in 1803. He was introduced to the arts when he took a job as a coach painter then as a scene painter for the Hastings Theater. Following a move to London at the age of twenty, he became an official student at the Royal Academy, an institution which elected him as an Associate in 1845 then later as a Royal Academician in 1867. Cooper’s skillfulness was showcased in his landscapes, earning him great respect, and his pastoral scenes of cattle grazing in green pastures were frequently exhibited at the Academy. The painting offered here highlights his fine brushwork and keen eye for detail of ruminating cows. With the leaves on the trees changing color, one can almost feel the crisp breeze of autumn running through the canvas.
