Charles Martin Hardie was born in East Linton. He was a painter of portraits, landscapes, interior, genre, country sports and historical scnees in oil and watercolour. He was the Ungle of Martin Hardie. Hardie worked as a carpenter in the family business. A family connection with John Pettie led him towards art and eventually to study at the Trustees Academy. He won the Stewart price 1879 and the Keith prize the following year. Early in his career some pleasant watercolours were often used as preliminary studies for major historical pictures. His work closely followed Orchardson.
Paintings by Hardie are Exhibited in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
